Though deep down we did really know it, the opening lyric to the new FKA twigs single ‘meta angel’ decisively reminds that, yes, pretty much everyone lives with their own doubts and insecurities.
“Each year I’m like ‘Oh, I’m gonna own my shit’
and then each year I’m still so shy and so quiet (aww)
No, but like, yeah (like, this is the year)
this is the year of greatness, bruv and being free (yeah)
I’m telling you”
Of course, from the very first note of her 2013 debut single ‘Water Me,’ to us there has been almost no one who has seemed to own her shit more than she. The winsome, languorous new R&B ballad is taken from her new mixtape CAPRISONGS (Ms. twigs is a Capricorn), which has netted her perhaps even more than the usual rapturous acclaim – only serving to make her uncertainties all the more fascinating, as she remains at the absolute top of her game. But worry not, by the song’s end, she is proffering a truly insightful possible solution: “Throw it in the fire / Ego in the fire” she tells herself, sounding still a little unsure if she will ultimately take her own advice. Either way, we couldn’t agree more on that strategy, for herself and pretty much everyone else.
In the at-first-somewhat-unsettling accompanying video, we see her raising and aiming a really terrifying crossbow, which somehow manages to look both medieval and futuristic at once. She then fires an arrow directly into the heart of another version of herself – but it’s a bloodless hit, so we’re guessing it’s best to just take it as a metaphor for killing off the part of oneself that is holding one back from necessary personal growth.
Still, FKA twigs is a professional, and we strenuously recommend not trying this at home.
