Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith Bought Part of a Basketball Team
“In West Philadelphia, born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of my days. Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool, and all shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school.” When Will Smith first rapped those lines in 1990, it was unclear whether he would ever leave the bright lights of Bel Air and return to Philadelphia. He had it all in California: An Uncle who was easy to poke fun at, a cousin who was easy to poke fun at, and another cousin who was also easy to poke fun at. 21 years later, Smith finally traveled back to West Philly. He won’t have to play b-ball on playgrounds anymore, however — along with his wife Jada, Will Smith just bought part of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Will and Jada are part of the 15-person investment team that bought the 76ers from their previous owners, Comcast. It’s an interesting time to purchase an NBA team; the players association and owners are currently locked in sour labor negotiations to see if there will even be a season this year. Yesterday, the two parties had a 15-hour meeting that had to be postponed and carried over to today on account of the fact that the meeting took 15 freakin’ hours.
Should they resolve the contract dispute this evening, fans will be able to spot Will and Jada sitting courtside at Sixers games by mid-November. If not, Smith will have to tell his fellow investors, “Smell ya later,” hail a cab and tell the driver, “Yo, homes, to Bel Air.”
