Happy Birthday, Noah Baumbach!

“I’m interested in how psychology becomes behavior… I’m always thinking of those things as cinematic and big and I see no reason why they shouldn’t be,” said filmmaker Noah Baumbach. And with his films, from the witty youthful ennui of Kicking and Screaming to the refreshing and awkward charm of Frances Ha, the director has given us many a misanthropic yet emotionally honest tale, with an affinity for exploring the relationships that complicate our lives and the struggle for human connection—whether it’s the strangely hilarious or the significantly heartbreaking . And as today marks his 45th birthday, let’s take a look back on some of our favorite moments from his films. Enjoy.
