BLACKBOOK PREMIERE: HOTT MT’s Psychedelic New Video for ‘Tranceforming’

They just made the LA Weekly list of 30 bands to watch. And their psychedelic cred is such that Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne has collaborated with them. But HOTT MT’s latest single, the poetically titled “Tranceforming,” seems to have more celestial ambitions.
The alluringly ethereal track recalls both the winsomely sexy pop sensibility of Saint Etienne and the gossamer sonics of Slowdive. (Think Haight Ashbury meets Madchester meets some faraway galaxy.) Yet it’s not so much an exercise in shoegazing as it is cloud surfing – with singer Ashi Dala (she even has a psychedelic name) transcendentally chanting “We should be tranceforming / Tranceforming, tranceforming.”
“It was originally a song [band member] Spooki wrote for his solo album,” she explains, “but I fell in love with it and we re-wrote it together as a HOTT MT song. This song is also inspired by The Neverending Story, specifically the motherly character Dame Eola. It’s a comforting lullaby, but it’s also a challenge to grow up. Whenever I sing this song, I feel like I sing it to myself – like I am both the mother and the child she sings to.”
BlackBook premieres here the fittingly trippy new video for the song – which is from their upcoming full album AU, released this Thursday, May 4.
