Yana Toyber’s Ramen Romance, and a Mobster Missing a Finger

“I took this photo at a train station restaurant in Osaka, Japan,” says artist Yana Toyber of the source image for Ramen Romance, a new limited edition t-shirt currently available through her website. “There was also a Miami Vice, mobster-looking patron there who was missing a finger. I shot him as well. That place was the best!”

Proceeds for the shirt—which costs $45, and comes in a signed and numbered edition of 75—go to the excellently named cat charity, Itty Bitty Kitty, Inc. The subject matter is something of a change of pace for Toyber, who has previously undertaken occasionally NSFW photographic series involving naked women cavorting underwater, twins, and various subjects half-submerged in the bath.

“Anything strange, bizarre, and escapist is a go-to for future t-shirts,” Toyber explains. “I envision some landscape images, particularly palm trees and the ocean. And I plan on doing a shirt with boobs, because boobs are art.” As far as semi-explicit fashion statements go, they’re also a bit less tendentious than other aspects of womanhood portrayed on t-shirts, like this gem from Petra Collins for American Apparel that swiftly became Internet infamous…or this very intimate “self-portrait” t-shirt designed by Karley Slutever.
