For all the Madonna cone bras and Fifth Element space age styles, surely the truly signature Jean Paul Gaultier design is the sailor stripes motif – which even adorned his iconic perfume bottles.
Now JPG is returning to the sea with the new Ready To Wear collection Les Marins – which, naturally, translates to “The Sailors.” It’s actually the legendary French designer’s first RTW collection since 2015, when he made the decision to focus exclusively on couture. But Monsieur Gaultier has always been a homme du peuple (man of the people), and so this return to more approachable fashions seemed ultimately inevitable.
The (unisex) collection itself is actually a collab with five guest designers, namely Polomo Spain, Ottolinger, Marvin M’Toumo, Lecourt Mansion and Alan Crocetti. So while there are signature JPG elements, there is also a playful but sexy eclecticism to Les Marins. Re-interpreted, of course, is le marinière, the archetypal US naval cap that has come to be inextricably associated with Gaultier.
For the hypnotic, aquatic campaign film, Bella Hadid is seen looking strikingly mermadic and swimming gracefully alongside fellow models Qaher Harhash and Omar Sesay, her stripey and very pointy cone bra possibly acting as a water displacement device. It’s honestly so inspiring after fifteen months of being locked down (and trapped on dry land), that it has us already planning our own new undersea adventures.
