The Quixotic Quartet: Coates & Others @ KTF Gallery

Although everyone from yours truly to a loud, boorish woman detailing how she loathed Canadian cities in the elevator’s slow, 11-floor ascent was bound for the KTF Gallery to witness the art of Jennifer Coates, we stayed for the lesser artists whose works were dressing up peripheral gallery space. But even with their art tucked away on the gallery’s more remote walls, Nick Blinko and Megan Greene (who mainly endeavor in paintings) and Brian Dettmer (who specializes in 3D mixed-media carvings) make the more obscure space crackle enough such that one glimpse invites you to explore the whole body of work. All four artists manifest an understated derring-do and effortlessly adapt, update, and overturn established aesthetics of everything from the painstaking detail of Gustav Klimt to the wistfulness of pre-Raphaelite art. And all without appearing contrived or ill-equipped. The show is on display through October 18.
