Charm can sometimes seem in short supply in NYC, but Papatzul in Soho makes a specialty of it. For a warm night out with friends, head to this cozy Mexican haunt. Show up a little early so you can act as host to your friends. A few steps up from the street is a quaint little bar. Luxuriate in the deep tequila list, or ask the barkeep to work up a cocktail like a Paloma Mezcalera, a smoky blend of grapefruit and mezcal with a chili-salt rim. When your crew has arrived, settle into a corner table in back, or take over the communal space in the center of the room. Folk art on the walls mixes with campy movie posters, making for an upbeat environment. (The lively Latin-tinged soundtrack doesn’t hurt either.) Get things started with a huge rock bowl of guacamole, fresh and seasoned with subtlety. The friendly waitstaff will help you navigate the modern menu, which tours through Mexican favorites from Baja (fish tacos) to Coyoacán (corn on the cob) to the Yucatan (egg enchiladas). As you get reacquainted with your friends, you’ll also be talking up the new flavors and cooking styles you’re discovering. Grab a pitcher of sangria for the table and go ahead and laugh a little louder than usual. No one here will mind.
