Max Fish Gets Approved + the Pancake Art Show

The approval of Max Fish by Community Board 3 brought great optimism to those who believe that nightlife in its—and I hate to use the word—hipster way can still exist in the L.E.S.  I agree with Erin Harvey of Bowery Boogie that Max Fish ended long before its final night. The reincarnation of St. Jeromes as Rivington Food & Beverage a couple weeks ago has garnished less excitement. The crowds that made Fish fly have moved away and have found drinking homes in the outer boroughs—homes that reflect the current rather than live off old rep.

Like the new St. Jeromes, Max Fish was saddled with a food requirement by CB3. I never wanted to eat at Max Fish or St. Jeromes. They were delightfully sleazy places that wetted my appetite for vices not food. But in the end, the ruling by CB3 was a victory. It seems the NIMBY’s in the voting mix saw that the cool character of the hood has indeed been replaced by barf bars and cheesy clientele, and decided to see if a return to cool might help the value of the real estate. Funny how it’s more expensive to buy/rent in BBurg than in the L.E.S.

But who says nightlife isn’t fun anymore? The folks over at M1-5 Lounge (52 Walker Street) have put together a terrific event. Ironic that it comes from a successful run in Los Angeles. The Pancake and Booze Art Show will mesmerize tomorrow night starting at 7PM. There is a $5 cover, but you get a lot. They say over 100 artists will show their work. There will be live Body Painting. There will be a Live Art Battle and of course an All-U-Can-Eat Pancake Bar. Plus, as if you needed anything else, live performances by…

8:15 – 8:45 – LUKE ELLIOTT
9 – 9:30 – MARCO ARGIRO
9:45 – 10:25 – SLIM WRAY
10:40 – 11:20 – COLD BLOOD CLUB
11:35 – 12:15 – The BUSHWICK HOTEL

And if that isn’t enough, there will be DJ sets by Cold Blood Club after the above. They had me at Pancakes.
