‘Knight and Day’ to Scuttle ‘MI:4’?

Knight and Day has been tracking very badly, and unless it magically proves a hit, both the film’s leads will, per usual, see their stocks suffer. How much? Depends on how epic the flop, but Deadline has it that if Cruise can’t reconnect with audiences this weekend, it could potentially jeopardize the future of Mission Impossible: 4 in any number of ways.

It’s always fascinating to see the old “you’re only as good as you’re last picture” adage being played out in real time. If anyone was immune to it, you’d think it’d be Cruise, especially since doing MI:4 without him is well nigh unthinkable. Paramount, should they lose their nerve, could resort to either scaling back on the budget or killing it outright. Then there’s also the possibility of giving the Ethan Hunt character a protégé, cutting the film’s Cruisiness by half.

I actually think none of these things will happen, that it’s just a lot of talk, but if I had my druthers I’d vote for killing it. Nothing against any of the involved parties or the previous films, but I’m in favor of a moratorium on fourquels and higher. Bond films excepted, of course.
