Sometimes the most memorable outings take place while the sun is still shining. For a great daytime meet up, bring your crew to brunch at Nolita’s Ken & Cook. You’ll feel relaxed right from the get-go, as the place is casual and welcoming. The design is smart without being distracting, mixing classic with contemporary. Settle in among the brick and pressed tin surrounds and let the glamour of the crowd rub off. To game plan, you’ll huddle up briefly. Some split appetizers are in order: maybe fried oysters with Srirachi and shallot remoulade, or kale with pomegranate and blood orange. If you’ve got some indulgences from the night before to sop up, shrimp and grits or chicken ‘n’ biscuits wait in the wings. The European feel of the bistro’s open front is amplified by the coffee, which comes in a proper service with silver trays and beakers. But maybe it’s time to move on from caffeine. Ken & Cook’s brunch fame centers on its bottomless drinks. The cocktails are daylight classics: mimosas, Bellinis, and a Bloody Mary that’s as pretty as it is punchy, with leafy celery sprouting above plump lemons and olives. As the drinks flow, conversation will as well. You’ll sort out the night behind you, and put the best possible face on the balance of the day.
