Hot Stuff: BlackBook Goes to the Desert for Our October Issue
I just got back from a marathon of photoshoots on the West Coast and am very excited about the work we did out there. L.A. and the surrounding areas are chock-full of great locations to shoot in. I’m not sure if it’s the air out there or the variety of picturesque environments, but I was feeling very inspired. So much so, that I wanted to share this sneak peak of a menswear shoot we did out in Palm Springs. Yes, we were in the middle of the desert in 120 degree weather, but even heat stroke couldn’t stop us from capturing some really strong images.
The look was all about desert renegades. I was feeling inspired by the Lanvin Fall/Winter show.
And the long coat looks that came down the Dior Homme runway…
But most of all, I was feeling Star Wars. I’ve always been obsessed with those movies. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t fly all over the country going to those creepy conventions or anything like that, but I grew up with the Jedi and I must say, Obi-Wan Kenobi was way ahead of his time in terms of fashion sense.
His look is having an important moment in fashion right now. Just have a look at Damir Doma’s fall/winter collection, who by the way, is one of my favorite emerging menswear designers.
And while I am not so much a fan of the newer Star Wars trilogy, I must say that Anikan Skywalker’s look is really major—the braid, the leatherized karate-inspired underpinnings, and that long black Jedi cape.
The look really got my creative juices flowing on set, which is a good think seeing as though I was completely dehydrated out there in a sandstorm of fashion.
