‘Flaunt’ It if You Got It

It’s Wednesday night and the Lower East Side is filled with its usual group of guys and dolls wandering about as if they had nowhere to go. I shuffle past the wallflowers on Orchard Street, pretty boys in skinny jeans and stovepipe hats, pretty girls that look like boys leaning against brick walls as part of the usual weeknight fashion show. I debate whether to join in the impromptu parade, but I am already late for Flaunt magazine’s Revolution No. 9 Issue Release Party.
I duck into the Gallery Bar where the parade has made it indoors, off set by the terribly talented deejays Mike Nouveau and Mike Simonetti of Italians Do It Better/Trouble Man Unlimited. Flaunt’s Elliott David points out the walls, garnished with the artwork of Rosemarie Fiore. “They were created using fireworks.” The large canvases were embellished with impossibly vibrant spheres of color. My friend elaborates. “I just spoke to Rosemary,” she says, eyes rolling, “and she said they were made by exploding and containing live fireworks.” Um, sorry?
The firework display certainly set the mood of the party as hoards of attendees made flirty small-talk in dark corners, a display exacerbated by the complimentary Dewar’s and a bartender with a heavy hand. Hedi Ferjani, fiancé to the lovely designer Erin Fetherston reviews the amorous scene and assesses dating in New York. “It’s hard to really find somebody in New York because the majority of the girls here are crazy.” Spoken like a true fiancé. And New Yorker.
I move through the chic crowd (not including that little circle of popped collars who looked painfully out of place) to make some flirty small talk of my own with one of those aforementioned pretty boys in skinny jeans. “An art exhibit is just another excuse for us to dress up and look good,” he decides. With that, we leave with the realization that he’s right.
