The BlackBook editorial team is hard at work on the magazine’s upcoming fashion issue, scouring the streets, shops, and runways for the latest and greatest trends in apparel and accessories, but perhaps the most interesting idea I’ve seen so far this summer comes via the popular social news site Reddit. In what may soon be marked as the genesis of a serious sartorial movement, Redditor msgodzillra posted a link on the popular Trees subreddit to an image of herself wearing a flowing white tank top with a peach, aquamarine, and violet print that perfectly matches the decorated glass pipe she holds in her right hand. Readers immediately picked up on the bold fashion statement—as well as msgodzillra’s undeniable good looks—and quickly peppered the post with hundreds of comments, most related to the rare confluence of coolness and hotness.
It wasn’t long before a couple of imitators showed up on the site with their best attempts at the affectation, breaking that crucial barrier of three that makes a trend official. Now that the gauntlet has now been thrown, the young and fashionable are scouring their closets and nightstand drawers for inspiration, hoping to adopt the msgodzillra look that’s so hot this season. Or at least they should be.
This could be a fun experiment for some and a nightmare for others. Smoke out of a decorated ceramic pipe or colorful plastic bong and you’ve got it made. A pastel shirt or floral print would work fine with a solid pair of slacks. Wooden bowl? Tan slacks or sweater. Stealth cigarette one-hitter? Long white shirt, short brown shorts. But if you’ve got some octopus vaporizer or exotic chillum you risk dressing like a circus clown. In any case, it might be best to pick the outfit before partaking.
