Cover That Booty: Asbury Park Enforces Decades-Old Bathing Suit Ban
Beach bums in Asbury Park, NJ will have to start putting a shirt on it after a hard day of tanning on the sand. One former bikini-hating local Republican councilwoman has decided to enforce a priggish, 4 decades-old ordinance that bans anyone from wearing a bathing suit on the boardwalk. Behold the lay of the booty-banned land, in all its prudish glory: "No person clad in bathing attire shall be on the boardwalk or the public walks adjacent thereto," it reads. That means whenever you step off the beach and into a bar to simply enjoy some margaritas, you’re breaking the law. Apparently, Ms. Louise Murray is worried that the skimpy digs will wash away Ahbury Park’s image as a “classy” Jersey Shore town. I guess the Jersey Shore does have some scruples left in it, after all!
So what is a law-abiding citizen to do? Here are a few of our favorite cover-ups for the local Ashburians, to avoid further tarnishing the virgin eyes of those unfamiliar with banana hammocks and non-nokinis (that law never sounded better!)
Go easily from beach to bar in this lovely lacey 100% cotton confection. The lace panels allow breathability (ie: air) to comfortably dry you whilst you roam around the boardwalk, plus the lady-like thin waist-ties come topped off with cute silver charms. Top it off with your favorite wide-brimmed straw sun hat and you’re ready for a pink lemonade.
If caftans are more your style, then consider investing in Theodora & Callum’s comfortably stylish Ibiza Caftan. Decked out in a blue and white ikat pattern, the breezy linen and viscose blend is a fitting choice for transitioning from the salty shore to a fancy summer dinner. Add cork wedges and you’re good to go!
I personally love the casualness yet sensual drape of a dashiki cover-up, and this Mara Hoffmann beaded coral silk number certainly takes the cake for the best one I’ve seen insofar. Then again, I am a bit obsessed with evil eye motifs, so you be the judge. This designer also has super sexy, low-cut one-pieces in bright ikat patterns and colors, so have a look-sea (pun intended)!
Sometimes a girl just wants to throw something on and not have to deal with zippers, buttons, laces… the list goes on. Avoid all those shenanigans with this Crystal Jin colorblocked poncho, which doesn’t resemble that nasty Ugly Betty Guadalajara mess in the least. Cutout shoulders and flowy batwing sleeves mean you can be flirtatious without compromising for comfort. Plus, it comes in 5 versatile colors… my favorite by far is the Midnight Mariposa shade… blue and gold? I’m sold!
