Giving the one-finger salute to New York — yet another state voting to keep homophobia alive by continuing to not recognize same-sex marriage — Jamie Frevele is auctioning off her right to get married, as a straight person. Clearly, there’s no real transaction going on here because you can’t sell your rights on eBay, but all the money she makes off of this auction (until eBay shuts her down) will be donated to the Point Foundation, a noble organization which, in their own words, “provides financial support, mentoring, leadership training and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.” What the winner will get, though, is a proclamation from Jamie herself, giving you her right to marry.
I will write you up a fancy, wonderful, articulate proclamation handing over my right to get married. I have no official documentation because this is something I was born with since I was born heterosexual. Unfortunately, this is only a symbolic gesture. However, since I’m picky and difficult, it’s probably something that, if a physical object, would have been considered pristine and shiny after some dusting. Your bid, on the other hand, is real, and the donation you make to an organization that supports those who have been treated as second-class citizens will be well worth it.
The auction closes on December 12, and bidding is up around $265 at the moment. Bid now if you’re feeling matrimonial.
