Everything is being turned into a graphic novel these days, from Anne Frank’s Diary to Macbeth. Now one brave artist, Stephen Crown, has undertaken a self-proclaimed “foolhardy attempt” to illustrate James Joyce’s enigmatic and indecipherable novel Finnegan’s Wake on the blog Wake In Progress.
Crown’s project is similar in scope to Zak Smith’s much-lauded illustrated book of Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, but the difference here is that Crown is documenting his entire process, too, including much-needed commentary. The drawings, like the text of the novel itself, seem ripped from a retro-sophisticated version of a lost Dr. Seuss book, in a good way. If there’s any book that could use some enlightening pictures, it’s Finnegan’s Wake. This should be a fun project to watch.
