Editorial Review

The latest offering in fabric-named eateries from Top Chef contestant Brian Malarkey has quickly become THE hotspot in historic downtown La Mesa, as oxymoronic as that sounds. Call it Urban Cowboy Diner or Meat Market Cuisine, the selection of slow-roasted, smoked, charbroiled and oil-boiled (aka fried) meats and fish will make any carnivore salivate. Whole trout is crunchy-fried outside, moist and flaky inside. Fried oysters are themselves lightly battered pearls, and short ribs are roasted low and slow. With all entrees under $20, the "Feast in the East" is both affordable and super-hip.
